      Merle Burtchell, 87

      NORTH ATTLEBORO - Merle Donald Burtchell, 87, of North Attleboro, a retired gourmet chef, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007 in Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro. He was the husband of Claire (Godbout) Burtchell, with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage.

      Born in Mars Hill, Maine on Jan. 24, 1919, he was the son of the late Otis and Rebecca (Nightingale) Burtchell.

      Merle worked at the Foxboro Company during World War II. He later worked at Jarvis Tap in North Attleboro. He worked as a chef and manager at the former Bishop's Tavern in Wrentham, and at the checkout at Don's Diner. He also opened and managed the Crystal Ballroom in Milford, and was head chef and manager of Bishop's Tavern in Harwichport. Baldwin's Office Supply was another place of employment, and Merle spent his last working years at M.A. Vigorito and Son in North Attleboro.

      Merle loved his family and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics on television.

      Merle also volunteered at LaSalette Shrine for 17 years.

      In addition to his wife Claire, he is survived by two sons, Wayne Burtchell of Pawtucket, and Guy Burtchell of North Attleboro. Also survived by his grandchildren: Chris Burtchell, Eric Burtchell, Noelle Goodman, and Ian Goodman; and his great-grandchildren: Corrin, Ryan, Cody, and Emma Burtchell.

      He was the grandfather of the late Rebecca Burtchell.

      A funeral will be held on Friday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. from the John J. Diamond Funeral Home, 180 North Washington St., North Attleboro, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Saint Mary's Church, 14 Park St., North Attleboro.

      Visiting hours are omitted.

      In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Burial will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
