Obituary
James Slocum Goodpasture passed away as quietly as a whisper on Friday, May 8, 2009, at St. Barbara's Memorial Nursing Home in Monongah, West Virginia. With him at his bedside were his wife Ginny and their youngest daughter Nancy.Jim was born on March 30, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Franklin and Marshall College, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the European Theatre as an ammunition truck driver in Belgium and Germany during World War II with the 309th Field Artillery Battalion. The winter of 1944-45, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He met his beautiful wife, Ginny (a Navy veteran), at a party for military troops. They were married in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, 60 years ago, on August 17, 1948. Assignments during his career with Sears Roebuck and Company took the family to Illinois, Georgia, Mexico (1958-1963), and back to Illinois where they bought a home and remained for the next 32 years. Jim took an early retirement from Sears to craft a second career out of his life-long hobby in photography. In 1995 Jim and Ginny moved to Sun City, Arizona and 10 years later they moved to Bridgeport, West Virginia. His creative talent surfaced early in his life when as a boy Jim learned to play the ukulele, harmonica, accordion, piano, and organ which he enjoyed even into his last days. His favorite song was the simple yet powerful "Jesus Loves Me". His boyhood interest in photography found him setting up darkrooms wherever he lived, and teaching the art of photography to his children. His sense of adventure was nowhere more obvious than when climbing to the top of Colorado's Pike's Peak, being the first person ever to drive the Pan American Highway from Mexico City to the Panama Canal on a solo trip, and venturing to the rim of an active volcano in Central America. Jim was a fun, generous, and compassionate man who loved to give million dollar bills to people he met in the course of his day. Nobody was a "stranger" to Jim. Jim is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Virginia Goddard Goodpasture ("Ginny") of Bridgeport, West Virginia; daughter, Karen Goodpasture, of Edgewood, New Mexico; daughter, Jessie Goodpasture and her husband, Rod White of San Francisco, California; son, Stuart James Goodpasture and his wife, Judy along with their three sons, Jesse (Second Lieutenant United States Army), Sam, and Lewis of Deerfield, Illinois; daughter, Nancy Goodpasture Castro of Fairmont, West Virginia; brother, Robert Goodpasture and his wife, Bebe of Spartanburg, South Carolina; cousins: Dick Heath and his wife, Nancy of College Park, Maryland and Dan Heath and his wife, Pat of New Market, Maryland and their families; and grand-dogs Jake, Zeus, Wrigley and Buddy.Jim's parents, Jesse and Marjorie Goodpasture, as well as his sister, Peg and her husband, Forest Irwin, preceded him in death.A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, West Virginia with Pastor Pete Staud presiding. Following the service, a film produced by daughter, Jessie celebrating their 60+ years of life together as Jim and Ginny Goodpasture, creating homes for themselves and their children in several locations in the U.S. and Mexico, will be shown at 3:30 P.M. at The Meadows at Maplewood in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Family and friends are welcome to attend both events.
