Adopted daughter of Stephen & Abigail Rackley. Died aet 18 yrs. & 10 mos.

The following obituary appeared in the Dec. 30, 1848 edition of the "Maine Cultivator and Hallowell Gazette:"

"In Lowell, Mass., November 11, 1848 Mary Asenath, the daughter of David Hale, of Livermore Falls. The deceased was called to part with her mother at the age of 11 years, at which time she was adopted as the daughter of Mrs. Rackley, of Leeds, who had lost all of her own dear children by death. Mr. and Mrs. Rackley nurtured her with the utmost care and affection, and Mary returned their kindness and devotion to their interest and happiness."

According to the Leeds town history, Mary was the daughter of Dr. David and Asenath (Lane) Hale. Asenath and Abigail (Lane) Rackley were sisters. Mary had siblings Fessenden and Florentine. Maine vital records indicates she had a third sibling, Parker, who appears to have died young. Mary's father remarried, and her two siblings lived with him.

Mary's Lowell, Massachusetts death record indicates she died of erysipelas, which was a somewhat common bacterial skin infection that was often fatal before the era of antibiotics.
