      Hattiesburg, MS

Linnie May Mower Garner, 70, was called home to God on April 18th, 2011. Though she fought a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, Linnie May never failed to offer a joyful voice or encouraging word to her beloved family or friends. Born in Dallas, Texas, Linnie May was a performer at heart and a gifted operatic soprano. She attained Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and was awarded a full scholarship to the Julliard School of Music in New York. Linnie launched a successful career as an opera singer and performed all over the United States. When Linnie met her husband Jack Garner, it was love at first sight. As Linnie's successful career grew, she moved her family to Germany for her position as lead soprano at Pforzheim. Linnie cherished her family, and after four years in Germany, returned with her family to Houston to care for her aging parents. During her time in Houston, she was diagnosed with a rare heart tumor and had open-heart surgery. This event re-prioritized her life, and she returned to good health with a commitment to her children and to volunteering for the Girl Scouts of America, which had been a cornerstone of her childhood and her parents' lifelong work.

After her children were grown, Linnie and her husband moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she worked with the Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, continued her work with the Girl Scouts, and taught private voice lessons. For the last five years, Linnie was a voice teacher at Alcorn State University. Linnie was a dear and loving wife and mother and an encouraging mentor to all blessed to know her. She will be remembered for her infectious smile, vivacious personality, and consistent ability to remain positive. Linnie Garner is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jack Garner; their son Robert Kendall Garner and his wife Laura Kate of New York City; their daughter Patricia Linn Burns of Hattiesburg, MS; her brother Lowell Kendall Mower, Jr. of La Jolla, CA; her father-in-law Walton Thorp Garner of Collins, MS; her brother in law Bob Edward Garner and his wife Tippy (McClary) Garner of Jackson, MS.

Linnie's ashes will be scattered around the world in the many beautiful places she visited in her travels.

In lieu of flowers, Linnie asked that donations be made to create a music scholarship in her name in order to perpetuate her love of music. To donate, go to any branch of Trustmark Bank or email the family at linnieg.memorial@gmail.com
