AUBURN - Raymond A. Hawkins, 84, of Auburn, died in Auburn Nov. 4.
He was born in Leeds, on June 28, 1924, the son of Fraser and Frances Hawkins. He met Arlene Wallingford while working at her father's farm and thought the farmer's daughter was awful cute. Shortly after he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and before sailing off, he and Arlene were married on Feb. 19, 1944, a marriage that lasted for 64 years.
He served in the Navy as an Aviation Machinists Mate, serving in Cape May, N.J., California, Texas, and the Philippines, and was honorably discharged in 1948.
He attended school in Monmouth and later graduated from the Auburn Maine School of Commerce in 1951 in accounting. He worked at Auburn Motor Sales and Marcotte Chevrolet as comptroller/office manager before starting his own accounting business in 1956.
He and his wife handled accounting and income tax services for countless businesses and individuals, many of whom became good friends. He retired in 1998. His local activities included serving on the Sarah Frye Home Board for 51 years and as their treasurer for 35 years.
He was a corporator for the Auburn Public Library, a member of Maine Association of Professional Accountants, a member of AMVETS Post 6. He was a 32 degree Mason, Tranquil Lodge 29 AM & FM, Kora Temple Shrine, Abou Ben Adhem Lodge, Pine Cone Chapter 26, OES, and Nor'Easter Maine Chapter, M.I. Hummel Club.
He enjoyed fishing trips with his brothers, traveling - especially on many cruises, gardening and yard work. He was 'the great fixer' of all things and loved to 'tinker with anything that needed tinkering'. His laughter, wonderful sense of humor and kindness to all who knew him will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife Arlene; daughters, Raylene and husband, David Scott, of Costa Rica, and Rebecca Hawkins and partner, Jayne Ottman, of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Scott; brother, David Hawkins; sisters, Joan Esman and Patricia Morrissette; and many nieces and nephews.
